6/2 Reflection

    Today was our first day back in our class. I wasn't very worried about coming back to school because I've heard that closing the school didn't really help to stop the coronavirus from spreading. However, I thought that only using masks and face masks won't really help. Because most students were close to each other since we haven't met for so long. I thought that the school needed to be stricter about these rules if they really want to prevent corona from spreading. But I also am really happy to be back in school. I was really sad that we couldn't do the final presentation last year so I am really excited about our class. 
    Mr. Paterson told us that since we won't have time to do our long presentations we would be shortening the time. He introduced us to a format called Pecha Kucha. I've heard this word in Japanese but didn't know that there was a presentation style named after this word. I thought that 20 slides 20 minute rule is very efficient and very useful. I also thought that deleting the Q and A was a good idea since sometimes my classmates just ask me questions about the presentation after class. Plus when we have the Q and A session I get worried that my question is not worth asking. I also, get nervous and can’t think of questions. So deleting the Q and A slide will help people like me to ask questions at our own timing. Another factor that interested me was that we have to speak for 20 seconds for each slide. I thought that it would be impossible for me to talk for 20 seconds for the photo reference and reference slides. However, when Mr. Paterson told us that we should be using that time to cover any gaps for things we forgot to mention or didn't have time to say in those slides, I was convinced and satisfied. I also liked the idea that we can introduce interesting references or back stories of photos.

Today Mr. Paterson introduces us to a tool that shows us if our choices of color are color-blind friendly. I never thought of the color choices that deeply. I knew that some combinations of colors are hard to see but just for normal people. When we checked our site, there wasn’t that much to fix but I learned that there are choices that normal people can’t notice.  Today the class was supposed to start the presentations but we were given more time. I hope that we can do a better presentation than the last one.

    Today in class, we were introduced to the world-systems theory. This theory was developed by Immanuel Wallerstein. Mr. Paterson showed us a graph with Kondratiev waves, when the graph goes up the monopoly of the technology and when it goes down the monopoly ends. This suggests that the world is divided into 3 countries, ①core countries, ②semi-periphery countries, and ③periphery countries. It argues that technology gets passed down through generations; rich countries get to use the new high-tech stuff first and when they are done with it, the poorer countries get to use it, when it's not high-tech anymore. The richer countries don't like it when other countries infringe on their monopoly and they try to come into the "core countries". They don't like sharing so it's very rare for semi-periphery countries to bump up to the core countries.       Today Mr. Paterson told us about the compare and contrast essay paper that we are going to turn in for this semester. When I was first informed that we didn't need to read our book like we did last semester for the first time I was very relieved. When I read books for assignments I have to constantly leave my antenna out on things like symbolism, tone, the author's thoughts, etc and it doesn't let me enjoy the book. The book becomes a pain when I have to think constantly about something else than the plot itself. I'm also relieved that we won't need a bibliography in this essay. This would save me time since I won't need to put articles from google scholar that I used hours to find. We just had a research assignment, and f inding reliable sources are very difficult. But since I had Zotero, it saves me a lot of time compared to the students who don't have it.      We decided to film our video this weekend. I hope we get enough footage to make the video...
