The story starts off with Melody (protagonist) explaining about words, and how they have been surrounding her whole life. All the memories she had were in words, and all the words had meaning. But only in her head. Melody can't walk or talk; she can't feed herself or use the bathroom on her own. Her arms and hands are stiff and can only push buttons on her wheelchair. Then Melody talks about how people see her. She knows that people only look at how her head wobbles, how she occasionally drools, and how her body tends to move randomly and never about Melody her self. Although it's hard for her to separate the real memories from the videos her dad took, Melody can recall precise memories. She had absorbed many details of her life with great sensibility; noises, smells, tastes, and of course music. When she listens to classical music, she sees the color blue and smells fresh paint.
